This actually happened to me about a month ago. I have two desktop computers in my home, one is my children's. My kids ruined three keyboards, then got to mine and destroyed it as well. I was already having trouble with my CPU and needed to do a complete reinstall of the operational system. I had been using the virtual keyboard to enter information into the system. So we had a time trying to enter the serial code, because certain keys didn't work on all of the keyboards.
My Dad is helping me with the re-installation, I have two hard drives c and f. The new system was to go on the c drive. After reading all the instructions and moving everything from c to f that I didn't want to lose we started the process. We got to the point where the disk asks are you sure that you want to erase everything on this drive, we joked about it for a moment, Dad asking if I was sure I wanted to hit the Y to continue the process. We hit the button waited the hour and a half it took my old Pentium 3 processor to filter the information and reformat the drive. We restarted the computer and low and behold everything that was on C was still there! We were shocked and stunned, it took us almost another hour to discover that what was reformatted was the F drive, the drive with all of my precious information. I lost about three thousand songs and records, countless movies and pictures. My dad felt real bad and the next day brought me a flash drive with about two thousand songs and a few movies. We are still trying to figure out exactly how that happened. But for the time being I have almost 8GB of free space.
once when i was busy doing my project work for some data transformation i used my dad s pen drive, my system was help less at that time i scanned for viruses but could not do anything and my data got lost.
It was a bad day for me, i lost all my movies and games which i stored in one of my harddisk. It was an harddisk with 80GB storage capacity. There were two sata ports in my computer and i have three harddisks. So it was not possible for me to use all the three at a time. Usually i used to transfer most of my games and movies into the third harddisk. I used to connect my drive when my pc is powered on. I just removed the power and sata cable from one of my harddisk and connect third third one when the power is on. Usually i am connecting this way itself. I connected the power cable and the sata cable. Then unknowingly i put my fingers on the circuit board of my harddisk, there came white smoke from the harddisk and it become so hot. Suddenly i remove my fingers and switch off my ups. Then i take a look at that harddisk, and connect it again and switch on the power, there came a lot of white smoke and the harddisk's circuit board started to heated up quickly. After some times i came to know that my harddisk became useless. I lost all my datas on that harddisk.

I earn my income from working from home and for four years i have this lap top of mine and it never one day gave me any problems and one fine day when i was boasting about my computer/laptop, and when she sits with me to carry out some web sites, we started in the highest spirits and all of a sudden my computer shuts down and when i called my computer technician, he informs me that all my data has been wiped out due to a virus. I thought i was going to have a heart attack as i had not stored it nor did i have a back up of all my datas.
Before 3 years ago i was working with a company which name was dev agencies as a computer accountant and as a computer operator. i was use tally software for the accounting. after some time my hard disk has crashed or curpted. and my data has finished . so i have faced many problems.
At one point I had been installing Ubuntu Linux onto my laptop, in order to dual boot it, now when I installed in the first time I didn't set a paging partition (Which is a bad idea to not do), so I installed a package that should have created a dynamic paging file on the main partition, and when viewed from the task manager, it appears to do that, however it also tries to reserve 32gb of space for itself, now I only had it installed on a 40gb partition, so naturally it wouldn't fit the 32gb for the paging file, because the basic Ubuntu install is at least 9gb (after I install the applications I usually use), now I had 20gb of free space on the partition that preceded it on the disk, so I decided to give that space to Ubuntu, so I booted up Windows in safe mode, and started my partition manager, and for some reason, the cpu core decided to go to 220 F which is critical, so it shut the computer down instantly, to avoid hardware damage, though I still don't know how it got that hot when I had an icepack on it, and the cpu was only running at 10% total usage, and it usually takes it running at 100% cpu for 15-20 minutes for it to even get to 210 F at which point it lowers the clock speed by half, halving the heat produced, and it starts to cool off, now when it shut off, it broke the partition which the boot-loader was on, making impossible to boot the other operating system normally, so I put in my mini-Windows XP live boot-able CD, and it had an option to try to boot via the vista boot-loader, which is what my Windows system was, so I tried it, and what-do-you-know, it boots windows, except for one problem windows wouldn't boot, so I put in the Vista recovery DVD and made it repair the partition, and then tried booting via the alternate boot-loader again, and this time it worked, and Vista booted correctly, so I started up my partition manager, in hopes of being able to maybe recover the Ubuntu partition, and thankfully, it had a setting which made it continue the operation it had been doing when it shut down, now the heat problem didn't occur when I booted windows normally, so I let it finish and I rebooted, and it worked! Ubuntu worked now! But I had done something else at some point and shut it down as it was installing a package, so it wouldn't work right, so I decided to re-install Ubunutu, with a paging partition, and it worked for a while, at one point I enable the splash screen at startup, and instead of a splash screen, it showed 8 copies of what the screen would have been in a line across the top, however each character was only one pixel, and a distinctive-ish color, and this wouldn't have been a problem, but there was what i think was an error, and I still don't know what the error was, but I decided to re-install the OS, and so I did, but this time I did something really bad to it, because it decided that the file-system that Ubuntu was installed to was super corrupt, so I re-installed it again, and that is what I am still using, almost 3 months later. Oh, and the first recovering of the Ubuntu system? just under 5 hours, without any data loss, and it was recovered, and I had crashed windows again, which I repaired and both OS's then worked, and I still think that was a record for recovering a dual-boot system without any data loss.
Ever noticed that computer problems always occur when you have a deadline or extremely important work to fulfill? So happened to me when finishing my final project at university. After five month of work I had set up a complex analysis tool on a university server and compiled a huge amount of data. All the data was analysed and the results looked good. Then, one morning when I wanted to access the server it did not respond any more. I checked several times and the result was aways the same. It turned out, that someone forgot to tell the administrators that this server was still in use and they shut down the system for a clean new installation. My data was gone!
